Julia Rosenman and Sara Rosenman
Long before we wrote Teachers Around Us, we were simply two curious students who had fun asking people if they would teach us about their work.
It started when we were in elementary school. We reached out to executives, scientists, engineers, public officials, entrepreneurs, and a long list of professionals who worked in fields that we knew nothing about. Some of these people answered our requests and some didn’t. Some introduced us to other people. Little by little, those conversations changed the way that we viewed education.
We discovered that the world outside the classroom is filled with people who are willing to teach if students learn how to find them, approach them, ask good questions, and importantly, keep going when the first answer is no.
Over the years, what began as our own curiosity grew into hundreds of conversations with professionals and eventually into work with students, educators, schools, and education leaders throughout the United States. Along the way, we became increasingly interested in answering a question that seemed surprisingly simple:
What would happen if every student learned how to make the world around them part of their education?
That question became Teachers Around Us.
We wrote this book not because we believe that traditional classrooms are missing great teachers. Quite the opposite. We believe that extraordinary learning can happen when what students learn in school is connected deliberately to the enormous world of knowledge, experience, careers, and people beyond it.
Our hope is that Teachers Around Us helps more students discover that opportunity, and gives them the confidence to go looking for it.
Inspire. Empower. Educate.
Some of the most important teachers in your life may be people you haven't met yet.
